JANE's Advice
May 2007

Q: : I'm a European man. Two years ago I married my girlfriend (who is Japanese). At first life together was great - she doted on me and I loved being her husband. She's a very sweet woman. Now though, I feel bored of being waited on, the lack of decent conversation or things in common, having my own way all the time. Whatever I do, she never complains or argue - I know this sound idyllic, but it's driving me crazy! Recently, I've been pushing her to argue with me, but nothing does it. I stay out late without telling her, come home in the early hours smelling of beer and perfume and rather than saying 'Where have you been?!' and giving me the hard time I deserve she asks me whether I'd like a cup of tea! I don't get her. I'm being really bad now having affairs with other women, which I'm sure she knows about, but she's content to put up with me. I've asked her for a divorce but she says she's happy in our marriage and doesn't want the shame of divorce. I'm really unhappy and at my wits end. Any advice for me?

A: Sadly, I've heard this scenario before. I feel sorry for your wife – she has been raised to behave in a subservient manner toward men and will put up with everything you throw at her. While I understand you're frustrated, it's most unfair for you to take it out on her by behaving like such a disrespectful cad. Ultimately, you need to take responsibility for your decision and honour your marriage vows. You enjoyed her company when you proposed, and surely took personality traits and cultural compatibility into account at that time. If you wanted a good argument you should have married a girl who sees herself as your equal and won't be treated badly. You can't have your cake and eat it I'm afraid. It sounds like you're in dire need of relationship counseling. Please see someone soon to try to work this situation out, since there's no point in being unhappily married.

Good Luck!
