JANE's Advice
April 2007

Q: I've been single for a long long time and have wanted to meet my life-partner for many years with no success. Recently, I met a man and we instantly hit it off. He's wealthy and highly respected, and as a lawyer I'm attracted to someone with similar circumstances to mine. We had a whirlwind romance and after two weeks he told me he loved me and wanted to marry me. He told me he'd always wanted to marry a lawyer. However, he's very temperamental - on Valentine's Day he swore at me telling me he didn't want me in his life and that it was over. He was awful to me and upset me very much.
Then a week later he apologised and came back. He explained to me that his ex-wife has been the bain of his life. So, I took him back because there are many things I really like about him. None of my friends and family like him - they all think he's arrogant and treats me badly. I agree that he does have a tendancy to be either really nice or really awful to me. However, I want it to work - how can I change him so he's nice all the time?

A: Oh dear, there are so many alarm bells going off in my head right now! Frankly, this man sounds like a woman hater and a control freak. If he's hot and cold towards you after two weeks, what's he going to be like after two years? Or ten years?! A successful marriage is built on a good foundation. It seems he needs to come to come to terms with his divorce before starting another relationship. You shouldn't suffer because of his relationship with his ex. I know you're keen to meet your life-partner, but make sure he's Mr Right rather than Mr He'll Do. Remember the saying, 'Act in haste, repent at leisure' - it's a good one to apply to whirlwind courtships.

Good Luck!
