A: There is an operation that reconstructs the hymen but this is expensive, unnecessary and possibly painful. In reality, sexual intercourse isn’t the only thing to tear the hymen – exercise and tampons are usually responsible. All of my daughters never experienced the hymen tearing during their first sexual encounter, probably because one liked to horse ride, another liked dancing and the other one enjoyed sport – their hymens were probably torn then. Hymens naturally erode over time and their thickness varies – so it’s actually unrealistic to expect it to be intact in this day and age when modern women have sex later and are more active. Therefore, lacking a hymen doesn’t automatically mean you’re not a virgin. If your husband contests this, have him read the Kinsey Institute New Report on Sex which says you can still be a virgin without a hymen.
