Counselor - Jane
Question:I'm Singaporean with a five year old son. My husband and I haven't had sex for over a year. Last night I tried to initiate intimacy but my husband finds sex quite a chore. He did have sex with me but only because I initiated it, not because he wanted it. Sex with him is unsatisfactory as he insists on just missionary position, no other. I've tried to get him to spoon me but he doesn't find it comfortable, and when I've attempted woman on top he loses his erection. I can't seem to make my husband excited and he can only get an erection through masturbation, not through anything I do, like oral. It is so frustrating for me. Also, my husband refuses to give me oral, and is only willing to use his hand but I can't get aroused this way. I'm unhappy about this.
Answer: It is difficult for me to give a definitive answer to your question as my advice would be different if this was a recent problem versus a long term one. Your first statement mentions that you both have a five year old son - did your husband have sexual difficulties before his conception and birth? Or did they appear after your son’s arrival? Has your husband always had difficulty getting hard (known as 'Primary Impotence') or is it something that has only recently appeared (Secondary Impotence)? The treatment is different depending on whether it is primary or secondary.

Your husband sounds as if he might be quite conservative about sexual matters. Have you discussed with him your worries and frustrations? Has he always been like this or is it only since the birth of your son? Other things that you need to consider are your husbands stress levels - especially if his sexual problem is relatively new. Many men suffer erectile difficulties if they are very stressed due to work, financial or relationship issues. I would urge you to sit down with him and tell him how sad you are that things are not working sexually in your relationship.

Don’t blame and shame him, try to convey to him that you love him and that part of being in a loving relationship is to express it in a sexual way. Ask him what does turn him on and arouse him. Can you help in this? He may have some special fantasies and needs that are not addressed by basic sexual intercourse. You of course have to feel comfortable participating in any activities he may suggest. Encourage him to go with you to seek some expert help. There are many possible reasons for your husband’s difficulty. Take the first step in helping your relationship by making an appointment to see your family doctor (physical problems, i.e. diabetes, have to be ruled out first) and then if it appears the issue may be more psychological in origin, see a sex therapist (Oohtique have a couples coaching and sex therapy room). Sexual difficulties can be helped by appropriate therapy if a couple is willing to work on them. Good Luck!

Question: May I know if its safe to use the vibrators vaginally during pregnancy? I'm currently 6 months pregnant, with no complications so far. My husband and I are still quite active sexually, but there are times when my growing belly gets in the way!
Answer: Good question. Using adult toys during pregnancy is STRICTLY PROHIBITIVE. This is because they can carry germs that lead to infections, or cause complications. Therefore, DO NOT USE THEM DURING PREGNANCY. It is a big mistake to do so, and most sex guides will tell you not to use them during this time. During pregnancy you can still enjoy a good sex life, with oral sex, mutual masturbation and gentle love making. Perhaps try something different - enjoy with your husband a sexy board game or erotic fiction (lots available at Oohtique), and extra time spent on foreplay… Best of luck with your pregnancy!
